What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Labor and Delivery (Including Some Surprising Must-Haves!)

As your due date gets closer, one of the most exciting (and slightly overwhelming!) things to check off your list is packing your hospital back. Whether you’re a first-time mom or this isn’t your first rodeo, it’s easy to overpack–or forget something small but essential.

As a newborn photographer in the Tampa Bay Area, and a mom of four myself, I’ve been through this process a few times and want to help make it easier for you. Here’s a complete, thoughtful guide on what to pack, including some not-so-common items that can truly make your hospital stay more comfortable and memorable.

Essentials for Mom

  • Photo ID, Insurance Card, and Birth Plan (if you have one)
  • Comfortable Robe and Loose Clothing (think nursing-friendly tops or gowns)
  • Non-slip Socks or Slippers
  • Nursing Bras or Tanks
  • Heavy-duty Pads or Adult Diapers (the hospital provides some but many moms prefer their own)
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, lip balm, dry shampoo, face wipes–hospital air is dry!)
  • Hair Ties or a Headband
  • Phone Charger (bring an extra-long cord–you’ll thank me later!)
  • Snacks

For Baby

  • Going Home Outfit (bring two sizes–NB and 0-3M)
  • Swaddle or Blanket for warmth and photos
  • Pacifier (if you plan to use one–some hospitals don’t provide them)
  • Car Seat (properly installed ahead of time)
  • Scratch Mittens or socks for tiny hands

For Dad or Your Support Person

  • Snacks and Drinks
  • Pillow & Blanket
  • Comfortable Clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Entertainment (book, tablet, etc.)

Not-So-Common (But So Helpful) Items

  • Portable fan–Labor can make you super hot, especially under hospital lights
  • Essential Oils or Roller Blends–Lavender, peppermint, or citrus can help with nausea, focus, or calming
  • Bluetooth Speaker–for your birth playlist or calming sounds
  • Handheld Massager or Tennis Ball–For counter-pressure during contractions
  • Eye Mask and Earplugs–Hospitals are noisy; these help you rest post-delivery
  • Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle–More comfortable than the hospital’s version
  • Your Own Towel–Hospital Towels are usually small and scratchy
  • Instant Coffee or Tea Bags–If you’re picky about your caffeine
  • Cute Swaddle and Hat–Perfect for those newborn photos in the hospital

Pro Tip: Pack Two Bags
Keep one small back with your labor essentials, and another for your postpartum stay. That way, you don’t have to haul everything into the delivery room right away.

Final Thoughts from a Mom of Four
Packing your hospital bag doesn’t need to be stressful–but having the right items can bring a sense of calm and confidence to an otherwise unpredictable experience. Pack with care, and know that no matter what you bring, the most important thing you’ll leave the hospital with is your baby.

If you’re in the Lithia or Tampa Bay Area and looking to capture those precious first weeks after delivery, I’d love to help you plan your newborn photography session. Feel free to reach out any time!
